William Jan Berry (1941-2004) and Dean Ormsby Torrence (born 1940) formed the musical duo Jan & Dean in 1959. They're often described as a precursor to The Beach Boys, producing close harmony pop songs in the surf music style. Their biggest hit was with Surf City in 1963.
