1918 cover to Guildford, carried on board the 'Southern Sea' which arrived at the island on 13 November 1918.
Cancelled with a very fine strike of type I cachet in violet, franked at 1d rate by a horizontal pair of Great Britain 1912-24 ½d green, tied on arrival by two strikes of 'F.S. 62 / LONDON' circular date stamps dated '27 JA 19'.
Exceptional quality for a Type I cover, and rare thus.
Cyprus 1880 (1 Apr) ½d rose, type 1 overprint on GB, plate 19, lettered "JE" , fresh colour with above average centring, excellent perfs and full original gum (with just a trace of hingeing). Minor toning but an attractive and desirable example of this key rarity, much above average, with impressive provenance and associations, being the right stamp of the horizontal pair formerly in the Richardson collection (RL 6/7/1960, lot 157), which was once attached to the block of 4 in the Royal Collection. Bermuda 1938-53 12s6d grey and pale orange, ordinary paper, lower right corner example showing variety 'Broken lower right scroll' (R5/12), unmounted original gum.
