Description

Great Britain May 1840 1d Mulready envelope, Stereo A144 (SG Specialised Catalogue Number: ME2b), to Westerham, Kent, cancelled by red Maltese Cross, dated “8 May 1840” in manuscript. Backstamped (London) “K/MY-9/1840” receiving house circular date stamp.

A stunning quality Forme 2 Mulready envelope with famous Maltese Cross cancellation sent from London to Kent on the 3rd official day of usage (8th May 1840).

May dates covers are desirable and highly sought after by specialist collectors commanding a premium valuation and this early May date envelope is exceptionally rare.

Accompanied with a 2010 independent certificate of authenticity from the British Philatelic Association (BPA).

The Mulready covers were issued on the same day as the penny black (6th May 1840), but failed to impress the public and were withdrawn in favour of the adhesive postage stamp.
