Great Britain 1929 ½d–1½d Postal Union Congress (Watermark Inverted), SG434/6var – Cancelled Type 33 Set
A very fine unused set of three commemorative issues with original gum from the 1929 Postal Union Congress, comprising the ½d green, 1d red, and 1½d brown values – each with the watermark inverted and overprinted "CANCELLED" Type 33.
The stamps are well-centred with strong colour and sharp impressions. The ½d value displays clipped perforations on the right-hand side, noted for completeness, but does not detract from the rarity and appeal of this set.
This is a scarce combination with the cancelled overprint and watermark variety.
Issued to mark the meeting of the Universal Postal Union in London on 10 May 1929. The selected designs were due to be submitted to King George V for his approval, however, the King’s illness at the end of 1928 prevented this, so Queen Mary approved them.
