Great Britain 1885 £1 brown-Lilac (I.R. Official, Watermark Crowns), SGO11s – “Specimen” Overprint
A very fine unused original gum example of the 1885 £1 brown-lilac I.R. Official, watermarked Crowns, lettered 'AA', with a clear “SPECIMEN” type 11 overprint.
This is one of the most iconic high-value departmental issues of the Victorian era, originally produced for Inland Revenue use. The deep, rich colour and well-centred design make this an exceptional example, rarely seen so fresh.
The Inland Revenue Official stamps were used by revenue officials in the provinces, mail to and from Head Office passing without a stamp. The London Office used these stamps only for foreign mail.
