Great Britain 1884 2½d “Jubilee” Essay, SG201var – Unique Hand-Painted Essay on Card
A spectacular and unique hand-painted essay for the proposed 1884 2½d Jubilee issue, executed in slate lilac and affixed to a small piece of white card (31 x 27mm).
This striking design is part of the earliest group of essays submitted before the design committee had issued formal guidelines. The stamp features Queen Victoria in profile surrounded by ornamental floral borders, inscribed POSTAGE & REVENUE.
The essay represents an important moment in the evolution of British stamp design, bridging the Victorian aesthetic with the emerging stylisation of the Jubilee series that would define the latter 19th century.
An exceptional and unique piece.
