Great Britain 1873 9d Die Proof (Type B), SG110var – “Deep Brown” on Glazed Card
A superb and very rare printer's die proof of the proposed 1873 9d issue, printed in deep brown on white glazed card (92 x 60mm). This is Type B, showing Queen Victoria in profile within a decorative frame, without corner letters.
The reverse is hand-inscribed “Deep Brown” and numbered “6”, as part of a small trial series produced by the printers, De La Rue for an intended issue featuring coloured corner letters. The design was ultimately abandoned, making these proofs among the scarcest items from this period.
Only one or two examples of each colour are known in private hands.
Provenance: ex. Latto collection.
