Great Britain 1872 1d Black - South Kensington Exhibition Proof (Die II, Plate 27), SGDP36.
A very fine unused example printed in black on thick white card.
Official permission was granted to printers, Perkins Bacon to print proofs of the penny black on thick white card specifically for display at the International Stamp Exhibition at South Kensington in 1872.
The printers were allowed to retain this sheet after the exhibition. Upon the liquidation of the firm in 1935 the sheet was broken up and sold.
