Great Britain 1840 1d Black Plate 2, SG2 – “May Date” Cover
A very fine used example of the Penny Black, Plate 2, lettered 'PB', with recut corner letter squares, tied neatly to an envelope by a crisp red Maltese Cross cancellation.
Posted from Torquay to Exeter, with a well-struck Torquay circular date stamp (cds) for May 27, 1840 at upper left, making this an especially desirable “May date” cover, from the first month of the world’s first postage stamp.
The stamp has four clear to large margins and remains fresh and well-preserved on cover. A highly attractive example from the earliest days of Victorian postal reform.
GB Specialised Catalogue No: AS15d/tj.
An important and high quality piece of Penny Black postal history.
