Superb appearance and an exceptional multiple of this exceptionally rare special proof production of the penny black.
In February 1872 official permission was granted to the printers, Perkins Bacon for the production of printed proofs on thick white card, imperforate from Die II, Plate 27 in black. These were produced for display at the International Exhibition at South Kensington in 1872.
The printers were allowed to retain this sheet. Upon the liquidation of this firm in 1935, the sheet was sold and broken up for sale.
