Description

George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States and a respected leader who helped steer the course of history during the American Revolutionary War. He is looked upon fondly by Americans as one of the great Founding Fathers.

A manuscript letter written by George Washington as President from his Mount Vernon home, dated Wednesday 17th August 1791.

Washington wrote the letter to Samuel Powell, President of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, regarding a visit to Powell's farm to see a newly-invented threshing machine in action.

Throughout the Revolutionary War and his political career, Washington always viewed himself as a farmer first and foremost.

Washington's main cash crop was wheat, having switched from tobacco in 1766, and he was eager to learn more about the new invention which could revolutionise production.

The letter reads:

"Dear Sir, at the moment you proposed half after Eleven, tomorrow, to see the operation of Col.o Andersons Machine, it did not occur to me that at two oclock I must be at home. - quere, is there full time between those hours to perform the ride & have full proof of the utility of the threshing Machine? - If you answer in the affirmative let the hour rem.n - If in the negative, I am under the necessity of postponing my attendance until the next day, or some other time. - Your solution of this question will much oblige..."

Washington concludes as Powell's "obedient and affectionate humble servant", and signs “G:o Washington” in crisp black ink.

The letter is written on a single sheet of paper measuring approximately 10" by 8" and is in fine condition, with minor spotting and dust staining.

It has been double-matted and professionally framed alongside a black and white portrait of Washington, in a display measuring approximately 20.4" by 13.4"

A superb piece of American history, featuring a particularly fine example of George Washington's signature.
