A hugely rare piece of Bob Marley’s dreadlock and accompanying autograph.
Acquired by the owner as a teenager at the filming of Top of the Pops at BBC’s Television Centre in London on Thursday, June 22, 1978.
The dreadlock measures approx. 1.5 inches in length.
Impossibly rare. This is the first genuine example of Bob Marley’s hair to come up for sale in 20 years.
Accompanied by a sharp and attractive signature acquired at the same time. On a slip of paper the reggae star has written in blue ballpoint pen: "To Andrea, Love Bob Marley".
The owner explains how she acquired Marley's hair and signature: "Back in the day you were permitted to get on stage at Top of the Pops with the bands. After Bob Marley had finished singing, myself and a friend went up onto the platform where he was performing. He was chuckling away and I asked if I could take off a piece of his hair. He just kept nodding and chuckling and appeared amused by it so I twisted a piece of his dreadlock off. And he of course gave me his autograph as well. I’ve kept it in my autograph album ever since."
The lot also features an original Top of the Pops promotional flyer. On the reverse, the consignor has written: "Andrea and Melanie went to Top of the Pops on 2/6/78, we saw Kid Jensen [presenter], Black Sabbath, Showaddywaddy, Heatwave, Bob Marley, Thin Lizzy and unfortunately Legs + Co."
A youthful error on the consignor’s part reveals she wrote the incorrect date on the flyer. The filming actually took place on June 22, 1978, not June 2.
The full line up was: Black Sabbath, Heatwave, Showaddywaddy, Brotherhood of Man, San Jose, Thin Lizzy, Bob Marley and the Wailers and a dance routine by Legs & Co. The presenter was David 'Kid' Jensen.
Bob Marley and the Wailers performed Satisfy my Soul.
A scarce piece of Reggae and popular culture history.
