Antigua 1938-51 1s black and red-brown, FRAME PRINTED DOUBLE, ONE ALBINO, SG105ab.
A brilliant unmounted mint example with full original gum. The albino impression is 2mm above and 4mm to the left of the printed frame, and readily visible in the top margin.
A major King George VI rarity, of which only a few examples are recorded and extremely rare in unmounted mint condition.
The printing variety "Frame printed double, one albino" is a classic De La Rue two-plate mishap. This was caused by the sheet being impressed by the frame plate once without ink leaving a raised "blind" or "albino" impression. It was then run correctly, with ink, but slightly displaced. These errors are seen across several King George VI issues but in very small quantities.
A wonderful design on this King George VI stamp with the image of a plane over St John’s Harbour. This was topical at the time as Imperial/Pan Am flying-boat services popularised Caribbean air travel in the late 1930s.
