British Guiana 1850-51 12c black and indigo "Cottonreel"

    £25,000.00

    Sold out

British Guiana 1850-51 12c black and indigo "Cotton Reel", type 'C' with thin frame, SG6. Indistinct MS initials, cut square with clear margins except frameline barely touched by "GU" of "GUIANA", neatly cancelled by large part "BERBICE" circular date stamp dated "DEC 6 1851".

Typical paper blemishes characteristic of the coarse "sugar" paper (tiny pinholes and insignificant traces of thinning) but much above average for this classic rarity, whose primitive charm is best appreciated in strong sunlight. Accompanied with a clear Friedl certificate (1979) as Scott 5b. The SG catalogue price is £45,000. A rare opportunity to own what is of the world's great stamp rarities.

    Sold out

British Guiana, Used, 1850-51 4c black on orange "Cottonreel', violet M/S initials 'WHL' of W.H. Lortimer, cut round with frameline intact, affixed to piece by a wafer and tied by 1851 Demerara 'MR 20" circular date stamp, SG2.

The method of affixation has caused some minor wrinkles not detracting in any way from the fact this is an attractive example of this classic rarity, particularly so with such fresh colour.

These crude and primitive stamps from British Guiana are extremely popular with collectors and investors alike. Accompanied with an independent certificate of authenticity from Holcombe (1985). The Stanley Gibbons catalogue price for this rarity is £16,000.

    Buddy Holly Employment Application Form

    For Sale: £795.00

Rock and roll legend, Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley in 1936. His music is said to have inspired the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Holley signed to Decca Records in 1956. His name was misspelled “Holly” on the contract and Buddy adopted this misspelt version of his name for his music career.

Just four years after signing his first record contract, on February 3 1959, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash with fellow rock ‘n’ roll musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. This date is often referred to as “The Day the Music Died”.

This is an application form for employment at The Texas & Texas Company measuring 11” x 8.5”. The form features some light staining and scuffing to the edges but otherwise in fantastic condition, especially considering its age.

Buddy Holly has printed his name “HOLLEY, CHARLES, BUDDY” in black ink but has failed to fill in any other information including position desired, address, details of education and practical experience.

Holly’s love of music was apparent from a very young age and at the age of just 5 he won a talent contest singing Have You Ever Gone Sailing (Down the River of Memories). It was most likely his aspirations of becoming a professional musician that prevented him from applying to this job.

An unusual piece of personal memorabilia from a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll.

Café Chambord Guest Book Signed by Stars of the 1940s

    £3,500.00

    Sold out
    • A 1940s-era guest book from the famous Café Chambord in New York, signed by its celebrity clientele
    • Signatures include Hollywood stars such as Alfred Hitchcock, Gene Kelly, Ingrid Bergman and Natalie Wood

The Café Chambord was a New York restaurant famous for its French haute cuisine, and an intimate atmosphere which attracted celebrity diners.

The restaurant was established in 1936 by Roger Chauveron, who began his cooking career in Paris at the age of 12 and immigrated to the U.S in 1924.

Unlike many of the city's most glamorous restaurants, the Café Chambord was simply-decorated with a rustic charm, and a glass wall which allowed diners to watch their food being prepared in the kitchen.

It was renowned for serving simple French country cooking, and first became popular with wealthy European emigrants fleeing the Nazis during the late 1930s.

As its reputation grew, it became a destination for sophisticated diners and celebrities alike - although rarely appeared in the society gossip columns, and remained a place to escape from the spotlight for the evening.

Chauveron sold the restaurant in 1950, and having moved from its original location on Third Avenue in 1963, the Café Chambord eventually closed its doors in August 1964.

This Café Chambord guest book includes numerous signatures, with entries dating from October 12, 1944 until June 3, 1948.

Notable autographs include Alfred Hitchcock, who signed alongside a sketch of his famous profile; Gene Kelly; Ingrid Bergman; Edward G. Robinson; Natalie Wood; Mary Pickford; Alan Ladd; Olivia de Havilland; Charles Coburn; heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey; and film producer Michael Todd.

A superb set of autographs from Hollywood's Golden Age, and an evocative piece of New York history.
