Description
British naval commander and national hero (1758-1805), Nelson was famed for his bold decisions and occasional disregard for his senior officers orders, resulting in significant victories against the French during the Napoleonic wars.
His greatest battle was his last, at Cape Trafalgar, which saved Britain from threat of invasion by Napoleon.
Before the battle on 21st October 1805, Nelson sent out the famous signal to his fleet 'England expects that every man will do his duty'.
He was killed by a French sniper a few hours later.
We have a signed Nelson document addressed to Thomas Graves, Rear-Admiral of the White, ordering him to place himself under Nelson's command.
Graves was second in command under Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen on 2nd April 1801, in which Nelson and his men defeated a Danish-Norwegian fleet after famously disregarding Admiral Sir Hyde Parker's command to fall back.
Countersigned at the foot by Thomas Wallis, and endorsed by Graves with the number 9.
