Rare opportunity to own a signed King George III document
A 13.25” by 9.25” July 9, 1803 document in partly printed vellum on one page. Signed boldly at the head “George R” by King George III.
The document records the appointment of Richard Y Vance, “to be Surgeon to Our Fifty seventh of the West Middlesex Regiment of Foot commanded by Our Trusty and Welbeloved General John Campbell.”
The document is in very good to find condition with some light staining and overall soiling, with intact paper seals under the King’s signature.
George III was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 until his death in 1820. His reign saw great Imperial expansion, but also the “loss” of the American colonies in the American Revolutionary War. Illness in his later life was movingly recounted in the movie The Madness of King George.
The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was founded as the 59th Regiment of Foot in 1755 to fight in the Seven Years’ War. It was renamed in 1756. In 1803 a second battalion was raised to bolster the regiment for its service in the Napoleonic War.
A rare opportunity to own a working royal and military document with a genuine signature by one of Britain's most successful monarchs.
