Early signed J Edgar Hoover portrait on cusp of foundational FBI leadership
A vintage, matte-finish portrait photograph of J Edgard Hoover, signed by Hoover with a dedication to writer George F Zimmer in 1934.
The 7” x 9.25” portrait is inscribed by Hoover on the mount: “To George F. Zimmer, with cordial regards, J. Edgar Hoover, December 1934.”
The full piece is 10” by 13.75” with the mat, which has some light soiling. The item as a whole is in fine condition.
J Edgar Hoover was the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a post he all-but created. In his position from 1934 to his death in 1972 he was a huge figure in American politics and justice from the Depression to the Watergate scandal.
This striking image catches him on the cusp of his great breakthrough. It was signed for George F. Zimmer. Zimmer was a former lawyer who became an author and radio personality, spinning popular stories of spies over the airwaves.
Hoover was a popular student of popular culture and crafted a strong, professional image for the G-Men of the FBI. He may well have been a fan of Zimmer’s work.
An important American icon at a key moment in his life in an attractive display piece.
