Description

  • An original invitation card signed by Fidel Castro.
  • Dating from April 1959, during his famous visit to New York.

Fidel Castro (1926 – 2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who led the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

Castro was the architect of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, which overturned the right-wing authoritarian government and turned the nation into a one-party socialist state.

Castro remains one of the most divisive political figures of the 20th century, revered by many as a champion of social justice and anti-imperialism, and hated by others as a brutal dictator.

In April 1959, just three months after leading the Cuban Revolution to power, Fidel Castro made a highly publicised visit to New ork.

He was greeted like a hero by thousands, and was followed by reporters on trips to tourist attractions like the Empire State building and the Bronx Zoo.

On April 21 he was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Women Lawyers Association of New York.

He gave a talk at the Hilton hotel on the 'Modern Concepts of Law', which was well recieved by attendees.

This is an original invitation to that event, signed on the reverse by Castro for one of the guests that evening.

The invitation measures 4" by 5" and is very fine condition, with light surface creases and mild toning.

Castro's signature is an excellent example, signed clearly and crisply in blue ink.

A superb autograph, which captures an exact moment in time for one of the 20th century's most sigificant political figures.
