Edward VIII abdicates the throne - his farewell message to the nation.
A recording of Edward VIII's farewell message to the United Kingdom, following his abdication in 1936.
Edward originally gave his message on November 11, 1936, in a worldwide BBC radio broadcast that was recorded by BBC engineers despite being ordered not to by government officials.
He stated "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love."
He added that the "decision was mine and mine alone... The other person most nearly concerned has tried up to the last to persuade me to take a different course".
This original copy of his historic speech on a 78rpm 10" shellac record was published in 1937 by the Majestic Recording Corp. The label reads "This record is not to be used for Broadcasting or Public Performance".
