Description

Niger Coast 1893 (3 Sept) ½d on half of 1d lilac, Old Calabar bisect provisional, unsevered pair, the left half clearly showing variety 'Straight top to 1 in ½', SG7a/c.

A fine and fresh mint example with large part original gum. Characteristic traces of backing adhesion and minor wrinkles but very fine for this stamp issue.

A very rare stamp as only 468 whole stamps were surcharged.

Accompanied with a British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate of authenticity (1971) as former SG7aa.

The main post office of Niger Coast Protectorate was established at Old Calabar in November 1891. Initially, British postage stamps were used. In July 1892, they were overprinted with "BRITISH / PROTECTORATE / OIL / RIVERS".
