China Manchukuo 1934 (Jan-Aug) set of 9 to 1y deep violet, recess printing, watermark w5, SG23/31.

A fine and fresh mint set with part original gum.

The 15f rosine is scarce as only 100,000 were originally issued and most of them were commercially used.

The designs portray the White Pagoda,Liaoyang and Pu Yi, later Emperor Kang-teh.

Afer the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan took over from Russia the lease of Port Arthur and Dairen in Kwangtung and obtained the right to station troops in Manchuria to guard the South Manchurian Railway. On 18 September 1931 these troops began the complete seizure of Manchuria. Independence of the State of Manchukuo was declared by Japan on 18 February 1932.

Pu Yi, who as child had been the last Emperor of China was made Chief Executive and on 1 March 1934 was enthroned as Emperor Kang-teh.
