Great Britain 1840 1d Greyish-Black Plate 7, SG3 – Red Maltese Cross
A very fine used example of the 1840 1d Penny Black, Plate 7, lettered 'FG', printed in the scarcer greyish-black shade from a worn state of the printing plate and neatly cancelled by a well-struck upright red Maltese Cross.
This stamp shows close to good four margins, with strong impressions and fine balance, particularly attractive for a Plate 7 printing.
GB specialised catalogue no: AS47.
This printing plate represents the last plate used exclusively for the penny black production before the transition to the penny red.
Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £500.
