British philanthropist and retail giant Charles Clore's autograph
A 4” by 5.25” paper with clear, bold signature of Chales Clore in black ink centrally placed.
Charles Clore was one of the best known and sometimes controversial post-war British businessmen, whose greatest success came in high street retail.
His name lives on through philanthropic foundations which have funded major cultural projects in the UK and Israel.
Clore was born in London, the son of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants to England. He worked for his father’s textile business before going it alone and quickly demonstrating a talent for finance by acquiring South African rights for the Tunney/Dempsey title fight of 1926.
An extraordinary array of business deals culminated in the 1954 acquisition of Sears & Co, which made him one of the biggest high street retailers in the country.
Charles Clore started the Clore Foundation in 1964, supporting arts, cultural, medial and other good causes in the UK and Israel.
Now called the Clore Duffield Foundation, among its most visible projects are a Clore Gallery at Tate Britain and a Clore Studio theatre in the Royal Opera House London. It also runs fellowship, leadership, networking and mentoring programmes. In Tel Aviv, a seafront park is named for Clore.
Clore was one of the most high-profile businessmen in the second half of the 20th century, a significant cultural figure in the UK and Israel, and a major figure in the British Jewish community.
This clear, simple signature is an attractive memorial to the great philanthropist.
