GREAT BRITAIN 1841 1d Red Brown Plate 8, SG7 — Distinctive Tallow Maltese Cross on Cover
A very fine used, close to good four-margin example, lettered 'JG', neatly tied to a small piece of cover by a crisp strike of the distinctive Tallow Maltese Cross. Addressed to the Bank of Ireland in Dungarvan, the stamp is further supported by clear postal markings:
-
Tallow dispatch circular date stamp (cds) for March 13, 1841
-
Fermoy transit cds for the same day
-
Dungarvan arrival cds dated March 14, 1841
A rare and important piece of Irish postal history.
According to Rockoff and Jackson’s authoritative census, only 11 other covers and dated pieces are recorded with the Tallow Maltese Cross, making this the second earliest recorded example.
A superb showpiece for both Maltese Cross and Irish postal historians.
