Handwritten note from Allen Ginsberg, the most celebrated Beat poet
A typed letter to Allen Ginsberg (1928 - 1997) annotated and signed by the Beat poet, and a double-sided handwritten note from the highly influential and foundational figure of the 1960s counter culture.
Documents comprise:
A single-sheet, typed letter to Allen Ginsberg from Vance Morgan of Chesapeake, VA, a high school literature teacher, dated September 1, 1979. It concerns Ginsberg’s work and particularly his poem Howl (1954 - 1955), the Beat Generation, Hippies and the future of counter cultures. The letter is signed by Morgan and annotated by Ginsberg, including a signed note under the typed text.
A double-sided handwritten note by Ginsberg concerning a quote (that Ginsberg cannot recall) with a quote from Walt Whitman written on the reverse, signed by Ginsberg.
He writes: "I have no memory of what 'quote' I wrote on previous card, nor did you inform me, so I can't satisfy your insatiable demand, Allen Ginsberg."
Allen Ginsberg is among the best known of the Beat Poets of the 1950s, who were a major influence on the explosion of pop- and counter-culture in the 1960s.
Ginsberg’s best known work is Howl. On its publication, the poem’s publishers were prosecuted (but acquitted) for obscenity.
Ginsberg was gay, and wrote frankly about sex and sexuality.
He was an early advocate of the psychedelic experience and of eastern religions. This made him a favourite with the hippy generation and a key figure in the 60s counter culture.
Ginsberg was often controversial, but his work is now recognised as among the most important in 20th Century American literature. He won the National Book Award in 1974, and the 1986 Robert Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of American for lifetime achievement.
These revealing and important papers are a rare chance to own original, high-quality Ginsberg penmanship.
