Buzz Aldrin was born in New Jersey in 1930. He joined the US Military Academy at West Point in 1947 and served in the US Air Force in combat in the Korean War. He was one of the third groups of astronaut candidates selected by NASA. In July 1969 Aldrin was the second man to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission.
In total, Aldrin spent more than 12 days in space before he retired from NASA in 1971.
He subsequently authored a number of books, including this 2005 children’s book designed to inspire children to pursue their dreams.
