Fabulous large original sketch of Uncle Bulgaria by Wombles creator Elisabeth Beresford
An A4 sheet with signed dedication from Elisabeth Beresford over her sketch of Wombles character, Great Uncle Bulgaria.
The Wombles were a group of furry, bear-like creatures who lived on Wimbledon Common in a series of children’s books and a subsequent television series.
Elisabeth Beresford was a not-very-successful journalist and writer when she created the Wombles in 1968, inspired initially by her daughter’s mispronunciation of Wimbledon Common as “Wombledon”.
The creatures, who live in a burrow under the south London open space, were featured in five novels. They became hugely famous when the BBC produced a children’s television series of their stories from 1973. A voice track by actor Bernard Cribbins helped to make them much-loved favourites.
A theme tune by Mike Batt was spun into a novelty pop group that saw costumed musicians scoring several hits in the Wombles name.
The Wombles' dedication to picking up rubbish has made them mascots to environmental and conservation movements; an anarchist group that was a major bete noir of the British police and press borrowed their name.
This charming illustration, showing Great Uncle Bulgaria, the wise old leader of the troupe, in a typical Wimbledon Common setting, is a superb and nostalgic piece for 70s children.
