Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson signed photograph

    £995.00

    Sold out
    • An excellent 1941-signed 8 x 10 inch photograph of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
    • Accompanied with superb provenance

In 1934, Prince Edward was next in line to the throne of the British Isles. He had no patience for the arcane rules of court life and embarked on a romantic relationship with twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. Her status was a huge problem for the staunchly traditional royal family.

When Edward became king of the United Kingdom in January 1936, he made it clear he planned to marry Wallis. When he was told this was impossible, he abdicated in December of that year. The couple lived out the rest of their lives in a whirl of parties and foreign travel.

Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, Duke and Duchess of Windsor, have signed at the bottom of this large black and white photograph. It’s dated 1941, when the couple were installed in Nassau in the Bahamas. Edward was assigned the position of governor on the island during the second world war.

This is a stunning autograph from two complex and intriguing historical figures, whose relationship has been the subject of endless speculation.

The piece is accompanied by an impressive collection of provenance, including the original letter from the Windsors' secretary to the recipient of the photograph and a certificate of authenticity from LA auction house Profiles in History – which handled the original sale.

EH Shepard Autographed Drawing for Punch Magazine

    £5,950.00

    • Satirical illustration from EH Shepard for 1936 edition of Punch magazine
    • Original artwork signed by the Winnie the Pooh artist
    • Originates from the Shepard family's own holding
    • Discover more about this item here

Ernest Howard "EH" Shepard (1879-1976) was a popular cartoonist, perhaps most famous for his illustrations of Winnie the Pooh in the famous books by A.A. Milne. He is also known for bringing to life the characters in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

Shepard worked as a cartoonist for Punch magazine from 1921 until 1953, and his work is often thought of as somewhat gentle and uplifting. Fellow cartoonist John Jenson once said "Shepard moved from strength to strength, increasingly able to impose his quiet humour on otherwise grim and humourless topics."

This original, signed drawing measures 8¼" x 7¾" and is mounted to an overall size of 15" x 15".

The detailed drawing shows Mr Punch standing is his living room which is adorned with Christmas holly. Mr Punch is holding a copy of a newspaper whose headline reads "COAL DISPUTE" and looking at Toby the dog who is holding an empty scuttle and pointing to the small amount of coal on the fire.

EH Shepard has autographed the original drawing in the bottom left hand corner.

The drawing is a reference to the dispute that resulted from the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission's proposal to regulate the production and supply of coal, and merge small mines.

Headed "VOLUME CXC", it is thought that this particular drawing was used as the front cover of the volume of Punch magazine January to June 1936.

This rare piece comes from the Shepard family's own holding.

  • Elizabeth Taylor Richard Burton love letter

Elizabeth Taylor love letter to Richard Burton

    £35,000.00

    • A handwritten love letter written from Elizabeth Taylor to husband Richard Burton in 1974
    • Incredible content that lays bare the passion between this legendary couple
    • Get the full story behind this piece here

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were two of the world's biggest stars when they embarked on an affair on the set of Cleopatra (1961).

Their romance was tumultuous. Burton was a womaniser and both were heavy drinkers. Still they were unable to stay apart for long. They were married twice, with both weddings leading to divorce. So intense was the relationship that it has gone down in Hollywood history.

A love letter written, in pencil, by Elizabeth Taylor to her husband Richard Burton on their 10 year wedding anniversary, March 15th 1974, just days before their breakup.

Taylor and Burton were renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie "The Klansman". Their lease on the home began on February 15th 1974.

    The letter reads in full:

"My darling (my still) My husband. I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you - (with you) - my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times.

Most of all my love for you, and whatever love you can dole out to me - I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only "boil and bubble" inside and hope you understand how I really feel.

Anyway I lust thee, Your (still) Wife. P.S. O'Love, let us never take each other for granted again! P.P.S. How about that - 10 years!!"

Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity. However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure. After that, Taylor made sure she was on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne Of The Thousand Days.

A further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years. An affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumours of an affair with Raquel Welch.

Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with "a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women."

The love letter is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them:

"This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th til April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the masterbedroom bed."

To our knowledge no other Taylor-Burton love letter has ever been offered for sale.

As seen in the Daily Mail, the Telegraph and the Daily Express.

Elvis Presley (1935 – 1977) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century, known to his fans simply as "The King".

As one of the originators of rock and roll, he created a music style which changed the world and inspired generations of artists from the Beatles to the present day.

Today millions of fans flock from around the world to visit his former home of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and rare items of his memorabilia regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.

'Elvis' was Presley's second studio album, released in the US in October 1956, and featured a mix of original songs, country ballads and Little Richard covers.

The record also featured a version of 'Old Shep' – the 1940s country song that Elvis had first performed in a Tupelo talent contest when he was just 10 years old.

The album spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Albums chart, making Elvis the first recording artist to have their first two albums go straight to #1 in the same year.

Five months after the release of the album, Presley was inducted into the US Army. He was assigned to Company A of the 3rd Armored Division's 1st Medium Tank Battalion, and completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas before heading overseas.

Elvis autographed and inscribed this copy of the album to a fellow member of the 3rd Armored Division whilst he was stationed in Friedberg, West Germany, and remained in the same family's collection for years.

The album bears Presley's autograph in bold blue ink on the reverse of the album cover, and another inscribed "Many thanks! Elvis Presley" on the album's protective inner sleeve.

The album sleeve shows overall age wear, creases and scuffed edges/corners. The original vinyl record is still present within.

This record represents the first signed Elvis Presley album we've ever had the pleasure of offering at Paul Fraser Collectibles.

Bearing not one, but two bold signatures, it represents a superb opportunity and would take pride of place in any music fan's collection.

    £2,425.00

England, Stuart. James I (1603-1625) Gold Ten Shillings (Double Crown)

Type: Hammered - Second coinage, 5th bust

    Mint Mark: Tower

    Minted from 1612AD

    Minted until 1613AD

Obverse: Crowned, draped , cuirassed bust of James right, 'IACOBVS DG MAG BRI FRA ET HIB REX'.

Reverse: Crowned Royal Arms dividing 'JR', 'HENRICVS ROSAS REGNA IACOBVS', (Henry united the roses, James the kingdoms).

This well struck coin produces a very good attractive and clear portrait of James I with very good details in facial features and drapery. Although, as a type, not particularly uncommon it is very rare and difficult to find in such a good grade and strong striking.

The coinage of James VI is a very large and varied issue - more so than any other Monarch, many new and innovatively designed pieces were introduced during this reign as well as several new denominations. These 10 shilling pieces of this second issue are usually referred to as 'double crown'. Due to inflation and a rise in the price of gold, these coins were revalued in 1619 at 11 shillings and a new lighter 10 shillings, the 'Half Laurel' was issued.

It is interesting to note the reverse legend - having become King James I of England, James VI of Scotland was very keen to unite the two Kingdoms - a concept which is still particularly current and controversial.

England, 1604-05 James I gold unite. Apart from a small flaw above the Kings right shoulder this is a very good example with a fantastic portrait of James in full armour. - shortly after he inherited the English throne. These coin dies were always rather shallowly engraved so unless one got a good strike the portrait would usually appear rather faint. This is a good strike and the details of this coin are sharp and clear making it attractive and desirable. With the unification of the two Kingdoms under one King, James put in Latin as his motto on the reverse 'I have made them into one people, thus the coin is known as 'Unite' .

AEF - About Extremely Fine, well struck and nicely toned.

Very handsome little coin, well struck with no weak areas and nicely toned.  However, what is particularly interesting about this coin is the very small 'privy mark' under the denomination.  This is engraved on the die and appears to be a small fish or a chalice on its side.  Very interesting and hitherto unrecorded.  Issued in the latter part of the Boy King's reign when he was only thirteen or fourteen years of age, is a superb contemporary portrait of Henry VIII's sickly son Edward VI. Just over a year or so later, in February 1553, at age 15, Edward fell ill.  When his sickness was discovered to be terminal, he and his Council drew up a "Devise for the Succession", attempting to prevent the country being returned to Catholicism.  Edward named his cousin Lady Jane Grey as his heir and excluded his half sisters, Mary and Elizabeth.  However, this was disputed following Edward's death and Jane was queen for only nine days before Edward's half-sister, Mary, was proclaimed Queen.  She reversed Edward's Protestant reforms, which nonetheless became the basis of the Elizabethan Religious Settlement of 1559.

    £1,995.00

    • A certificate of recognition awarded to a Cuban social worker in 2001
    • Featuring a fine signature from Fidel Castro
    • Discover more about this incredible item here

Fidel Castro (1926 – 2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who led the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

Castro was the architect behind the Cuban Revolution in 1959, which overturned the right-wing authoritarian government and turned the nation into a one-party socialist state.

Castro remains one of the most divisive political figures of the 20th century, revered by many as a champion of social justice and anti-imperialism, and hated by others as a brutal dictator.

Prior to his death in November 2016, Castro was listed on the PFC40 Autograph Index as the world's most valuable living signature, with the price of his autograph having risen 16.9% per annum since 2000.

This certificate was awarded to a Fernando J Valdes Freenas in July 2001 and commemorates his completion of a course in social work.

These large certificates were produced throughout Castro’s presidency to recognise the efforts of Cubans in society. This is a particularly good specimen.

Measuring 16.5 x 11.8 inches, it features a bold example of Castro’s signature in blue felt tip pen.

This certificate was awarded to a Marcial L Gomez Calderius in December 1982, in recognition of his work with the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR).

This CDR remains active today and serves as the eyes and ears of the Cuban government at ground level. Every neighbourhood has its own branch, with 75% of Cuba’s 11.2m population registered in the organisation.

Every local resident has a file, which is regularly updated on information with their personal relationships and activities. The CDR also performs less sinister operations, including blood drives and recycling initiatives.

This is a large and fine example of Castro’s signature, executed in blue ink. The certificate itself measures 10.8 x 8.5 inches and is in good condition. A minute tear to the bottom right does not detract.

    Fidel Castro signed government decree

    £2,950.00

    • An official Cuban government decree signed twice by Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro (1926 – 2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who led the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

Prior to his death in November 2016, Castro was listed on the PFC40 Autograph Index as the world's most valuable living signature, with the price of his autograph having risen 16.9% per annum since 2000.

A rare 1959 official Cuban government decree featuring the superb autograph of Fidel Castro as Prime Minister. The document is also signed by the President of Cuba, Osvaldo Torrado, and the Minister of Communications, Enrique Oltuski.

The decree is dated 20 November 1959 - just 11 months after Castro seized power.

Castro has signed in black fountain pen above his title of "PRIMER MINISTRO". The page is enhanced by two official embossed seals under the signatures of Castro and Oltuski.

A second page features a second Castro autograph, in the form of his initials. Torrado and Castro have both also signed this second page.

The decree ended Cuba's use of an unpopular one cent postage stamp surcharge, used to fight tuberculosis in the country.

It is accompanied by a card bearing the photos of Fidel Castro and Cuban politician Eduardo Chibas. It reads: "Verguenza contra Dinero!/Shame against Money", and "Libertad o Muerte/Freedom or Death".

All documents are in fair condition. There is some tearing to both pages of the decree that does not affect the signatures.
