Stunning Edward VIII naval portrait
A presentation portrait photograph of the young King Edward VIII (when Edward Prince of Wales) in naval uniform, signed by the Prince, “Edward P”.
He is shown aboard HMS Renown in 1921.
The picture is framed in a mount marked HMS Renown and a brown leather-covered frame with easel back. The frame measures 16 by 13 cm.
It is sold with two printed itineraries: “Record of Voyage of H.M.S. "Renown" to India, Japan, and the Far East, 1921-22' and 'Record of Tour of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales to India, Japan and the Far East, 1921-1922” and associated postcards.
Very well-placed, handsome signature on the mount at bottom right of the picture.
Edward Prince of Wales found meaning in military service. He served with the Grenadier Guards (despite being well under the height requirement for the regiment) during World War I, but was kept away from the front lines on political instructions.
A young, handsome bachelor, Edward was a powerful PR tool for the British Royal Family and Empire and Renown’s trip took him around the world and was captured on the film 50,000 Miles with the Prince of Wales.
Edward’s strong will would shake the institutions of the Empire to their core in the next decade. Here, he is a young man on the brink of a planned procession into power and pageant.
An evocative and attractive display piece that would grace any British royal collection.
