Rare wartime Christmas card from the British royal family signed by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
It is highly unusual to find a WW2-era George VI-signed card available for sale.
Card bears a mounted black-and-white photograph (dated August 1941) showing King George VI with Queen Consort Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) flanked by daughters Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II).
Picture taken at Crathie Kirk Church, the Royal Family’s local place of worship near Balmoral.
Gilt embossed crown to the front. Light handling wear to card. Includes original envelope, in which it was sent to Miss C. Maclean in Inverness, Scotland. Card and envelope together measure 17 x 22cm.
Card signed in black ink, "George R.I." and "Elizabeth R." (R.I. for “Rex Imperator” recording the king’s status as Emperor of India.)
Rare, charming Christmas card showing the vital role of the Royal Family during the Second World War. George is in military uniform; he was Colonel in Chief of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. Princess Elizabeth would later serve in uniform in the ATS.
