Wine expert James Suckling releases updated scores for 'best modern vintage'

"The best modern vintage ever..." That's how the eminent wine expert James Suckling describes the renowned 2009 Bordeaux in his revised tasting notes.

Suckling's updated notes on the top 2009 wines precede the expected publishing of Robert Parker's revised notes later this year. Parker's previous comments on the 2009 Bordeaux were highly enthusiastic - so expect plenty of future demand for 2009 wines in the collectors' markets.

When the 2009 vintage was first released in 2010, Suckling joined many of his fellow critics in unanimous praise of the year's vintages. He gave nine of the wines 100-point scores and judged 14 of the wines to be potentially perfect, taking further ageing into account.

So how does Suckling feel about the slightly-older rare wines now? Mouton Rothschild, for instance, was among the wines considered by Suckling to be on its way to perfection. It has since fallen behind slightly in Suckling's view, although only to 98 points.

Overall, Mouton Rothschild is one of 22 fine wines to receive 98 points or more from Suckling. Ausone, Lafleur, Vieux Chateau Certan, Super Seconds Montrose and Cos d'Estournel are still perfect wines with 100 points each.

Below is a summary of Suckling's 100 point wines, as published by Liv-Ex on its blog. Expect each of these vintages to consolidate its 'perfect' status at the world's top auction houses in 2012 and beyond.
