Romanée Conti - the most valuable wine in the world

The 1999 Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1999 Cote de Nuits bottle brought $10,000 to the sale, further displaying the Burgundy's prowess at auction.

The Burgundy also achieved excellent results recently at Christie's, with six bottles achieving HK$726,000 ($93,531) in its auction of fine and rare wines in Hong Kong.

The current world record for Romanée Conti at auction stands with a case of the coveted 1990 vintage, which sold for HK$2.32m ($297,400) in 2011.

2012 has been another superb year for Burgundy, with the Liv-ex 100 Fine Wine 50 Index attributing a 1.16% price rise in February to demand for blue chip wines from the region.

Despite the Burgundy's success, the top lot of the sale went to a horizontal cased lot of first growth Bordeaux 2000. The lot comprised 60 bottles, featuring all five of the vineyards to be granted Premier Grand Cru status. This fantastic lot sold for $55,000, sitting comfortably within its estimate of $45,000-65,000.

First growth Bordeaux is up 3.36% since January according to the Liv-ex Index, suggesting that the buyers of this important lot will find much to enjoy from their investment in the forthcoming years.

One of the most intriguing lots in the auction came from an 1820 bottle of de Luze et Fils Grand Fine Champagne Cognac. Featuring a hand blown bottle, one of the earliest examples of de Luze's distinctive style, it made $1,500.
