'Lucky 8' DRC assortment tops Acker wine auction at $303,000

Acker Merrall and Condit's October 26 auction in Hong Kong has achieved outstanding results, led by a "lucky 8" vintage vertical assortment of the illustrious Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) wines.

The spectacular vertical of Lafite Rothschild vertical - 63 vintages of the most sought after Bordeaux

The auction totalled $5.1m from 700 lots, with the DRC assortment - containing eight vintages from 1993-2000 - selling for $302,869.

DRC assortments are, for many, the pinnacle of Burgundy collecting, offering bottles from each of the esteemed domaine's estates - Romanee-Conti, La Tache, Richebourg, Echezeaux, Romanee St Vivant and Grands Echezeaux. They are normally offering in cases of 12, though the lucky 8 contains some of rarest vintages.

Vertical lots dominated the sale, with a further four spectacular verticals from Bordeaux completing the top sales. A 63-vintage vertical of Lafite Rothschild brought the second highest bids, selling at $88,308.

As the auction house points out, Lafite is arguably the most sought after Bordeaux from the last century, with this vertical beginning with the benchmark 1945 vintage and ending with the superb 2010.

Following was a 40 vintage vertical of the rare Chateau Petrus, which spanned 1969 to 2009 except for 1991, which was not produced. Included were five wines that have achieved a perfect score of 100 points from wine critic Robert Parker.
