Chateau Trotanoy 1982 double magnums up 19.5% on estimate

A single lot of three double magnums of Chateau Trotanoy 1982 has provided one of the highlights of Hart Davis Hart's latest wine auction.

The item sold for $7,170 at the October 27 sale, beating its $6,000 estimate by 19.5%.

The double magnums were among several Trotanoy bottles offered at the Chicago auction that came directly from the Pomerol estate where they are produced - a factor that will no doubt have enhanced their appeal with collectors.

Among them were further offerings from the spectacular 1982 vintage, regarded as one of the winery's finest years.

Two lots of 12 bottles from the year sold for $7,767 and $7,170, respectively, both comfortably surpassing their $6,000 estimates.

12 bottles from 1966, held in their original wooden case, sold above their $4,500 valuation with a $5,337 performance.

More than 250 bottles of the Bordeaux were put up for auction in all.

Away from the Trotanoy, there was also a strong showing from an imperial of the Chateau Petrus 2000, which sold for $38,240 against a $35,000 valuation.

The auction provided some rare good news for Bordeaux investors of late.

The Liv-Ex 100, which tracks the price of the world's 100 most sought after vintages - mostly Bordeaux - rose 0.5% in September but remains 9.2% down since the start of 2012.

The Burgundy market, however, is in good shape - led by DRC. The Liv-ex DRC Index grew in value by 9.1% between July 2011 and July 2012.

Three bottles of DRC's 2005 Romanee-Conti, sold just below their high estimate of $48,000, making $47,800 at the Chicago sale.
