64 wine world records set in NY thanks to diverse market

A 1985 Domaine de la Romanee Conti assortment was the top seller at Acker Merrall & Condit's May 19 auction, in a sale that set 64 new world records.

The Burgundy assortment achieved $46,740 at the New York sale, but had plenty of competition for top spot from the Bordeaux in the auction.

12 bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild's 1982 offering sold for $36,900, while a Chateau Latour from the same vintage made $20,910.

Six bottles of Petrus 1989 achieved $20,910, while nine bottles of the 1990 realised $31,980.

Meanwhile, a rare 1928 La Mission Haut Brion made $19,680.

20 of the 64 new world records came from Italy and California, 30 were from Burgundy, while 18 of the top 25 lots were Bordeaux.

"Bordeaux and Burgundy's top estates remain what collectors worldwide want in their cellars above all else," commented John Kapon, the chief executive officer of Acker Merrall.

He added that the performance of great reds from Burgundy, Italy and California "shows how diverse the market for the world's greatest wines has become.

"That is a trend we expect to continue as more and more collectors globally recognise just how collectible these wines are and will be. "

Values for leading Bordeaux wines grew by 3.36% between January and March, according to figures from the Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index.
