1996 Charmes Chambertin Burgundy wine could be the toast of internet auction

Following on from their extraordinary 2011, in which they broke an enormous number of records and re-confirmed their place as the number one wine auctioneers in the world, Acker Merrall and Condit struck gold again in January with a small but still record-breaking sale in Chicago.

The event saw enthusiastic bidding from collectors both present and worldwide. Nearly all lots were sold resulting in a $1.85m sales total.

But no sooner had the dust settled on the auction with its star lot, the 1985 Assortment Case from the Domaine de la Romanee Conti, than Acker presented its first online sale of 2012.

The auction, which opened with the month, presents an impressive 2,500 lots and closes on February 12.

Burgundy fans should look out for: six bottles of 1996 Charmes Chambertin, two bottles of 2007 Bonnes Mares and nine bottles of 1996 La Cras. There’s even a bottle of 1955 DRC Richebourg.

Bordeaux fans in search of a classic will find a single bottle of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, whilst very, very sophisticated party animals might instead make a move for the bottle of 1928 Pommery Vintage Champagne Brut Nature.

Recent auction results suggest that the prices of fine Bordeaux may have plateaued whilst those of other regions (not just Burgundy, but Rhone, Italian and Californian wines) may still be rising, so it will be interesting to see what results this auction shows.

The sale will end at 8pm (New York time). Watch this space for the results.
