1982 Chateau Petrus case headlines Christie's at $53,500

1982 Chateau Petrus remains popular with collectors, with a 12-bottle case of the sought after vintage selling as top lot in Christie's Fine Wine auction in Paris on June 28.

The Bordeaux brought an impressive $53,547, comfortably meeting its $47,000-73,000 estimate.

The estate's small size means that all vintages are produced in very small amounts, increasing the rarity and appeal for collectors

1982 Chateau Petrus is a hugely respected vintage, with Christie's head of fine wine David Elswood stating that "Petrus '82 is generally recognised to be the best wine there is" in an interview with the BBC.

Bonhams' own head of fine wine, Anthony Barnes, added: "The hallmark is that it's powerful but not heavy. You get this intense flavour without being too hefty. It's very well balanced so you don't get a great thump at the beginning or the end."
