Rolex chronograph wrist watch shows it's time to celebrate at a Birmingham auction

As we reported, last Monday a Birmingham, UK auctioneer held another of their Vintage & Modern Wrist Watches auctions.

Although in between times they sell relatively run of the mill watches, the auctioneer can present some real gems, and this was a busy auction as bidders crammed into the hall to get involved.

Towards the more affordable, but still impressive, end of sale was a 9ct gold manual wind Rolex Oyster Imperial Chronometre wrist watch. Bids rose up to £1,600 for the elegant timepiece with gilt Arabic numerals.

A particularly interesting aspect of the auction was the presence of three watches belonging to the legendary diver Carl Spencer, who investigated the Titanic.

Titanic memorabilia is attractive in its own right of course, and much less attractive items than fine timepieces have brought strong results.

In this case, two limited edition Doxas, sold for a total of £3,900 whilst a stainless steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller bracelet watch went a little further, selling for £4,100.

The star of the show, however, was a bi-metal manual wind Rolex chronograph wrist watch. Boasting gold hour markers and an attractive design, it proved irresistible for Rolex fans, selling for £12,000.

Other luxury watches currently for sale include this piece by the Swiss luxury watchmakers, Longines from our stock.
