A 1942 Rolex reference 4113 split-seconds chronograph made $2.4m, edging out the $2m set by a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 'Paul Newman' a few minutes earlier in the May 15 sale.
Sam Hines, Phillips' head of watches, said: "The market showed great appetite for the finest and most original watches".
