Eric Clapton's platinum Patek Philippe 2499 sold in November

The sale, which was conducted simultaneously in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, saw bids of $422,500 for the watch, bringing a 20.7% increase on its $350,000 high estimate.

Despite being an incredibly rare watch - one of just 349 - this is not the first appearance of the reference 2499 at auction this year. In November, Eric Clapton's Patek Philippe 2499 - which is one of just two platinum examples ever made - sold for an impressive $3.6m at Christie's Geneva auction.

The 2499 is among the most popular models produced by the illustrious Swiss brand, having been in production for over 70 years. The example at auction originates from 1955 and is made from 18k gold. Featuring its original leather strap, it boasts a perpetual calendar and Moon phases.

The clock is one of Cartier's most successful designs

Also starring was an unusual Cartier rock crystal, lapis lazuli, jade and emerald boudoir clock, which was produced in the 1920s. One of Cartier's most successful designs, the piece sold for $116,500 as the second highest valued lot in the auction. A similar clock, attributed to Maurice Couet in 1929, currently forms part of the Cartier collection.
