Eva Peron brooch to highlight Christie's October 15 jewellery sale

The historic "Mystery Set" sapphire, diamond and coloured diamond Argentine flag brooch previously owned by Eva Peron will highlight Christie's October 15 sale of magnificent jewels.

Presented to the first lady before 1949, the brooch depicts the horizontal blue and white tricolour of the flag with a superimposed sunburst. The emblem, known as the Sun of May, represents the May 1810 installation of Argentina's first elected government and the end of Spanish rule.

In 1998 the brooch sold at the same auction house for $992,950 after a fierce bidding war. This time around there is a modest estimate of $300,000-500,000, although this will likely be surpassed.

An 8.77 carat rectangular cut pink diamond ring with a $5.5m-6m estimate will also be offered.

The diamond, which is among the finest in its class, is joined by a 3.81 carat cushion cut blue diamond ring with a $2.5m-3m estimate, and a 5.13 carat square cut yellow diamond ring with a valuation of $200,000-300,000.

Rahul Kadakia, head of jewellery for Christie's in America and Switzerland, commented: "For the first major fall sale in New York, our team of jewellery specialists have travelled the globe to gather the finest quality diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and rare vintage jewels from notable estates and private collections.

"In anticipation of a continued strong market we look forward to offering collectors the best in the world of jewellery auctions."

The auction comprises 400 lots and is expected to achieve sales of over $40m.
