Dazzling jewellery sale comes to New York in time for Valentine's Day

From delicate period jewels to bold contemporary designs, Sotheby's first jewellery auction of 2011 comprises a wide selection of styles to ensure there is something for every taste and occasion.

For Valentine's Day, heart-shape jewels are featured in the Important Jewels sale this February, including a beautiful twin stone ring set with entwined emerald and yellow diamond hearts as well as an enamelled heart pendant made by Carlo Giuliano in the late 19th century.

The former is set with a heart-shaped diamond of yellow hue weighing approximately 2.80 carats, a heart-shaped emerald weighing approximately 2.60 carats, framed and flanked by round and square-cut near colourless diamonds weighing approximately .70 carat, and calibré-cut emeralds

It is expected to sell for $50,000-75,000. Another colourful highlight is a platinum, sapphire and diamond ring from the collection of Beverly B. Bernstein of Washington DC.

The cushion-shaped sapphire weighs 4.02 carats, and is flanked by oval diamonds weighing approximately 1.75 carats on the ring which is size 4½.

Accompanied by an AGL report stating that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin and has had no heat enhancement, the piece is expected to bring $40,000-60,000 and it could make a strong investment.

Amongst the auction's important diamond highlights is a classic Harry Winston ring set with a 16 carat emerald-cut diamond and a 9 carat heart-shape diamond and ruby ring by Oscar Heyman.

The former is size 6½ with the main stone flanked by tapered baguette diamonds, and it is accompanied by a GIA report stating that the diamond is of I colour, VS1 clarity, justifying its listing of $300,000-400,000.

Complementing the array of diamond engagement rings and timeless jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, collectors will also find unique jewels by David Webb, Tony Duquette and Michele della Valle.

The auction takes place on February 2, 2011 in New York.
