A circa 1998 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak stainless steel automatic calendar watch achieved $42,500 at Christie's.

The Royal Oak was the first luxury sports watch

The lot was one of a selection of pieces offered in the Important Watches sale in Dubai on October 19.

The Royal Oak model was introduced in 1972 and is regarded as the first ever luxury sports watch.

It was created by Gerald Genta, one of the greatest watch designers of the 20th century, who based it on a diving helmet.
