Alpina's new extreme Chrono watch

The new Alpina Avalanche Extreme Chrono Double Digit Watch isn't just a long a fancy name, it also boasts some fancy design features.

The "Double Digit" in its moniker refers to the hour indicators, which have been replaced with five minute indicators; a no-nonsense design feature more suited to aviator watches from the past which draws attention to the more crucial, longer minute arms.

Inside, the watches movement is powered by the Alpina caliber AL-850, a modified Swiss ETA automatic movement.

Available in two versions, steel and PVD coated steel on 46mm wide cases, the watch's sportiness is emphasised by large screws on its bezel. Sapphire crystals on the front and rear of the watch help its 100-metres water resistance.

Both versions have an "open" date window, with one sporting thin, red subdials and rather difficult-to-see skeletonised hands.

This luxury watch, likely to be priced at a few thousand dollars, is available soon.
