Sotheby's upcoming sale of Important Jewels in New York will present a number of high-quality diamonds to get the year started. Unusually the sale is dominated by yellow diamonds.
A pair of fancy yellow intense diamond earstuds weighing 3.18 and 3.02 carats and mounted in 18kt gold can't help but catch the light and the eye. They are expected to sell for $75,000-100,000.
Likewise, a rectangular modified brilliant cut, fancy intense yellow diamond is set in a size 6 ring. The 6.69 carat diamond is held in place on the 18k gold and platinum ring by two white trapeze cut diamonds and the whole has an estimate of $100,000-150,000.
Star of the show is expected to be a 10.05 carat fancy yellow heart-shaped modified brilliant-cut diamond set in a platinum and white gold (22kt) ring of size 6½. The main diamond is framed by four round cut diamonds.

The ring was made by Christopher Designs and is signed 'Christopher' accordingly. Sotheby's are putting this piece under the hammer with a guide price of $400,000-500,000.
Sotheby's auction takes place on February 3 2010. 2009 was a good year for diamond sales, and Sotheby's will be hoping to match the $10.5m achieved last year for a vivid blue diamond at some point in 2010.
