Unique Item of the Week... the $60k Russian Grand Piano

This one-of-a-kind instrument would turn heads in any concert hall, and realised five figures after appearing for sale in the US.

Underneath this is a regular 5' 7" baby grand piano - but its outer Russian malachite decorations and bronze surmounts make it our Unique Item of the Week.

The Louise XVI-style American Steinway and Sons features an inlaid malachite treble clef on its lid.

This Steinway and Sons piano sold for $60,000

What's more, anyone who attempts to tune it will be surprised by a classical and intricate hand painted Italian pastoral scene.

But this historic instrument isn't just pretty to look at. Its piano mechanism was restored by a retired Steinway master craftsman, leading to its condition being billed as "better than new" when it sold.

It realised a final hammer price of $60k at Great Gatsby Antiques and Auctions in Atlanta, US, in 2005.
