Steinway baby grand piano carries '$16,000' estimate UK auction

A stunning 1930s Steinway baby grand piano is auctioning at Barnard Castle, County Durham, on Saturday 3 March. It is estimated to bring between £7,000 to 10,000 ($15,929).

The piano was hand-built in 1937 by world-famous piano makers, Steinway and Sons.

"Steinways are widely regarded as the world's finest pianos and are renowned for their superior sound and responsive touch," said auctioneer David Elstob.

This particular piano is listed as being "in good condition" and has been carefully looked after by the same family for more than 50 years.

The family recalls that this piano was first bought second-hand in the 1950s in the north of England.

Elstob also reckons that, alongside the joy of owning an original 1930s Steinway, this piano could be a good investment.

The Model S piano is finished in rich mahogany. Also of note are the techniques and materials used to hand-craft it, which were reserved for Steinway's concert grand pianos.

Each of these pianos took a year to build, and each had its own unique number.

With that in mind, expect this piano to sell for well beyond its £10,000 presale estimate when it auctions this weekend.
