A J & E Stevens Germania Exchange cast iron mechanical bank recently sold for $51,000 at Bertoia Auctions.
The bank displays a goat holding a beer mug
That’s double its $25,000 estimate.
The rare 19th century piece was discovered in the attic of a home in Virginia.
It depicts a goat sitting atop a barrel. When a coin is deposited in the slot, the goat stands up and offers the depositor a mug of beer.
Very little is known about this particular variation, including the dates of production. Only a few exist.
