For sale: An important George III period mahogany and satinwood cabinet

An important George III period mahogany and satinwood cabinet designed by John Linnell, circa 1775.

Linnell was a prolific and leading London furniture maker during the last third of the 18th century.

His use of multi-coloured marquetry in geometric criss-cross patterns, combined with French style ormolu mounts - all of the most superb quality - are distinctive features of his work and style.

This beautiful cabinet is on a moulded plinth base.

The upper part with a frieze inlaid with classical swags and tails, the doors framed in satinwood, enclose 24 lettered and numbered compartments, the lower doors with a large circular panel of satinwood within quartered mahogany veneers.

Formerly at Castle Howard, where a collection of John Linnell's furniture can still be found, this cabinet was almost certainly commissioned by the 5th Earl of Carlisle, a client and patron of John Linnell.

Castle Howard is one of the grandest private residences in Britain and will be familiar to fans of the 2008 film Brideshead revisited

This piece was stored by the distinguished removals company Jas Bowman & Son of York in the early 20th century.

Their label along with the house inventory number - 862, can be seen on the back of the cabinet.

The drawer front labels refer to rooms and sections of Castle Howard.

The cabinet measures H: 89" W: 44" D: 37"

A stunning item in superb condition.
