The lot will lead the Science and Nature Signature Auction in Dallas on September 28.

Triceratops skull
The Triceratops skull was discovered at the Hell Creek Formation in Montana

It was discovered at Montana's Hell Creek Formation, which appears to have been a centre for the species. Between 2000 and 2010, almost 50 complete or partial skeletons of juveniles and adults were uncovered.

Triceratops first appears on the fossil record around 68m years ago and was primarily distributed across the north-eastern corner of the North America.

Heritage comment: "Almost nothing has as much broad appeal as a Dinosaur, and an authentic Triceratops skull may be just about as phenomenal of a fossil as one could imagine…

"Discovered on private land in Montana, and coming from the noted Hell Creek Formation that is famous for incredible Dinosaurs, this skull was unearthed almost ten years ago by an expert collector and was restored by an accomplished preparator, who has restored over seven Triceratops skulls to date."

Another Triceratops skull achieved £193,875 ($302,445) at Christie's London in September last year.

There are a number of other fascinating fossils on offer, including a prehistoric swordfish in unparalleled condition.
